Welcome to what we hope will be a long journey together as the YMCA and K-Bar Farm partner together, to bring you simply, the best! We have had this farmer’s market or something of the like in the works for frankly for years! But in His time!
So here at the Claire Chapin, YMCA we are with our first date of Thursday, August 10th 2023! We will host this from 9-1. We plan to start with some beautiful fresh produce from our spray free farm and some optional like minded farm partners to help fill your plates with well as we say, simply the best! Non GMO is our first priority, spray free is our second priority! We hope to bring better than organic to our community. Most don’t know that with an organic license, there’s still an approved list of more than 20 pesticides, herbicides and fungicide’s that can still be used in their growing program and get an organic license. Not all of them are as ‘safe’ as you would think they should be. With that we understand the pains of growing food and feeding our family and a community. When we feel there is no more we can do to save a crop we may use neem oil, Bt spray (a natural insecticide for helping to control caterpillar problems without harming friendly fauna) and things like DE / diatomaceous earth and dish soap, vinegar, baking soda, and good old fire! If that won’t take care of the problem then we will pull it all and possibly feed it to the hogs! And start over. This is why we do lots of small patches. Nothing is grown commercially here on our family farm everything is hand planted and hand picked. This also means no soy or commercial kibble as a rule for our animals (beef, pork, chicken, turkey and eggs). We focus on rotational pasture and woods, free choice hay, minerals and local spent fermented brewer’s grain. We also grow fodder for our animals for different reasons and seasons. An example would be when there’s not much green out there we grow extra fodder then, and we like to offer fodder to our goats when they are in milk and we are milk sharing with them and their babies. (No we are not a license dairy so we do not offer dairy products) but we have a beautiful goat milk soap you may love.
We do offer meat but will not be bringing it to the YMCA at this time although we can direct you to our farms store (4504 Socastee Blvd opens at noon m-s) to pick up retail cuts at your convenience. We also have a fantastic 1/4,1/2&whole beef/pork program. Portion orders are delivered directly to your home with many customization available. Pork depots are available here on the website with more information.
it is our intent to offer, honey, jams, dressings, elderberry syrup, and potentially other goodies from our farm and farm store at these markets they may change seasonally, and I’m sure some items will sell out before others.
we will take cash, card and tap at the market. Cards and tap will incurred a convenience fee.
. You are welcome to add items to your pick up the day of in cash or card along the way we will try to also include other farm, fun goodies like honey jams, jellies, maybe some candles and so on.
Are you not a member of the YMCA? Well you must come and check things out. See Trish for the full lowdown on all of the amazing benefits of the YMCA. Click here for more information!
